[Game localization] Good Dubbing Makes Fans Jump for Joy

Greetings, we are Latis Global Communications, a company dedicated in localizing games. We provide high quality game services to game developers all over the world. We also provide informative content to help developers successfully expand their market abroad.

In the previous article, we talked about dubbing.

Dubbing helps players focus on gameplay and stay immersed. It can be a major selling point when properly done with good voice actors and localized dialogue.

Today, we will briefly go over four examples of successful Korean dubbing.

1.The Halo Series

Halo is a Sci-Fi themed FPS originally developed by Microsoft’s Bungie Studio (later 343 Industries). Developed for Xbox, many titles of the series have a place in the Hall of Fame due to their fascinating storytelling and the top-notch graphics for their time. There are still players who buy an Xbox just to play this series.

Unlike other game series released in Korea, the Halo series has always been localized with Korean dubbing. The only exceptions are the spin-offs. The series is known in Korea for its top-notch voice actors and some of the best voice acting.

This work was highly acclaimed for its top-notch quality localization, which perfectly conveyed what Xbox’s flagship game was truly made of.

2. Half-Life 2

Half-Life is an FPS game developed by Valve Corporation. When it was first released, fans praised it for its solid gameplay. However, after it was released in Korea via Steam, the Korean voice acting turned out to be a disaster and the majority of fans said that it was far from what they had expected.

Fortunately, the sequel, released in November 2004, rectified the situation. Excellent subtitles and the outstanding casting of Korean voice actor Seong Woo Jin helped the game make a glorious comeback.

3. Rise of the Tomb Raider

Crystal Dynamics’ Rise of the Tomb Raider is an action adventure game released in 2015. It is the modern reboot of the classic Tomb Raider series featuring Lara Croft, one of the most memorable heroines in game history.

The company put a lot of effort into polishing the voice acting, hiring well-known Korean voice actors and going the extra mile to include bold swearwords to make the game experience feel realistic.

4. World of Warcraft

Our last choice is an obvious one. It’s Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft. It is one of the most successful MMORPGs of all time, featuring the lore and characters from the Warcraft series, its spiritual predecessor.

The voice acting of the game has always lived up to the hype. Wrath of the Lich King, the fourth expansion of the game in particular, was the peak in terms of voice acting, and was hailed as being as spectacular as a blockbuster Hollywood movie. Famous Korean voice actor Seong Woo Jin gave his best performance, making the characters as unique as possible.
